    Best and safest. Just need a recommendation please.

    I have had some successful experience in the past using Recuva to recover deleted data on an external and internal HDD (https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva). If this is what you are trying to do, AVOID installing and writing ANYTHING on the HDD prior to using the data recovery software (try to run it off USB), since that might write over the data that has been "deleted" (i.e. the sectors containing the "lost" data are marked as "empty" in the file allocation table and may be overwritten).

      assume, we do, that you are talking a Windows PC and that the drive format is what?

        Well, I forgot the password and reinstalled the OS. Its SSD so I was hoping I could stick it in another laptop and recuva from there since the monitor is now cracked. It was Linux@ Euroamerican. Its times like this that I wish I had had faith in the cloud. Actually, scratch that. I still don't.

          It's called GRU but it's pretty specialised.
