    ICE officers asked the mayor in Portland to give up control of the city’s police department and sent letters Wednesday asking the federal and Oregon Justice Departments to investigate his handling of this summer’s Occupy ICE protests.

    Portland’s protests were among the most chaotic and violent of the nationwide efforts against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, lasting weeks and forcing the shutdown of ICE’s office in the city.

    The National ICE Council, the union that represents ICE officers, says Mayor Ted Wheeler fueled the confrontations by expressing support for the protesters and in both public and private statements made clear to police that they were to stand down, ignoring some 911 calls from agency employees being menaced by the protests.
