I'm pretty sure some of the Israelis would say it is about parenting, they have a sense of Identity, a love of country, so defence of said country isn't a chore.

Israel is the exception to the rule, not surprising since the country has been on a war footing more or less continually since 1948, also a country with a large budget towards its military and security and their National security checks are second to none with regards those going into the military, more so for non/State based applicants, its population gets a choice, military service or hospital orderly service, with an opt out on religious grounds for the ultra orthodox - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscr...tional_service

problem is you need to start somewhere - today's teenagers are tomorrow's parents - so a bit of national service might make them better parents in the long run

I know its never going to happen with the snowflake generation we have

Again Israel is a predominantly Jewish country, where service for Muslims located in the State is optional, so its not a good examplein reference to the needs of the U.K.

Having National Service again would amount to a political gimmick in relation to saying Anual unemployment is down, the military needs high standards not a continual rotation of part timers, who no doubt some would elect to stay in but the majority would arse around until they got their discharge.

There is no longer any infrastructure for any kind of NS in the UK anymore either. It's a lazy political point scoring idea.

As a mandatory alternative to military service maybe, but a system still exists for people who volunteer

That's primarily a case of motivation. If ze Germans were looking at another shot at the title, National Service wouldn't be such a silly idea. But they're not, so it is.
