  • Oxfam: Deputy resigns over sex claims amid crisis talks

Oxfam's deputy chief executive has resigned over the handling of a sex scandal involving aid workers.

The British charity is accused of concealing the findings of an inquiry into claims staff used prostitutes while delivering aid in Haiti in 2011.

Penny Lawrence said she was "ashamed" and takes full responsibility.

Oxfam - which denies a cover-up - has met with the International Development Secretary in a bid to prevent its government funding from being cut.

Ms Lawrence joined Oxfam GB in 2006 as international programmes director, leading teams across 60 countries, according to the charity's website.

I think the same. Charity are supposed to be the pinacle of morals and ethics, though this will hit them hard, not the deputy specifically as I don't think that beside the fact she takes responsibility for this clusterf*ck she was so aware, informed of all this stuff. Until further investigations.

Prostitution involving also minors is pretty disgusting indeed. We are not talking some aging dude hiring escorts because he feels lonely and horny, hand out $200 and they are done. This seems so far well organised and, overall gross.

wow , you too ? But charities make you feel so guilty for not donating . Remember a story a few years ago , a 80+ year old woman killed herself after been hounded for charity donations. Had something like 30+ donations from her account plus constant letters . Sadly charities have become capitalist entities , completely against why they were set up for in the first place .

Hopefully they will name and shame all of them - but guess what it won't happen as these tossers are now at other 'charities'

Tax payer should not give charities a single penny or any tax relief

Also we need to cut foreign aid budget to zilch

Main drag in the city is prowled by gangs with clipboards and iPads, blocking your way, going can I ask you a question about clean water?

One day, they've got a jacket from Amnesty on, next day, it's for WWF. I support a few mental health charities privately, but I've got a few conspiracy theories about the big charities, probably doing a lot of good in the world, but also making sure, they are getting paid very well themselves.

I do give some €€€ to the bum outside the bakery on occasion, because I am fine with my town's bum feeding himself.

I also leave coins for candles when I visit churches. That pretty much sums up my generous act of charity.

I donate time/expertise to two charities and money to another. Which I tell the charity collectors on the streets means I don't have anything to spare for them as well.

Most of the charities/NGOs I’ve seen operating in the developing world have been filled with people whose main occupation seemed to be living large in secure compounds and complaining about how much they could achieve “if only”.

Lots of do-gooders wearing NGO/UN logos who are often at best lazy losers who can’t cut it in the private sector, to at worst predators.

Now I start to understand what they meant when they said that they needed my help........... If only they would have been clearer from the start on the kind of help they needed from people, people wouldnt be avoiding them like the plague . We need your help to organize an Orgy, with Hookers, Booze & Cocaine!!!

But now seriously. Big NGOs and Charities are just a business like any other, their main objective is to make money. There are plenty of people making big paychecks in those NGOs, who have never put their feet out of the financial district of any big city in the West. They make money out of the misery of people in need. They only want misery to continue and grow, because its the way to keep their business and luxurious lifestyle going. I always found disgusting them wasting money on publicity, paying primetime advertises instead of using the money to help those in need.

I give donations to my son school who has several community development proyects ongoing in Cameroon and Madagascar, and on a Scholarship program for kids in Cameroon to help them to complete their education and support their families. Its a Catholic school, and the programs are run by the nuns and priest overseas ((so no orgies...... they would probably make more money that way, selling those for subscribers on internet LOL))

Juan Alberto Fuentes is arrested on charges related to his former role as Guatemalan finance minister.

I used to donate monthly to four different charities but due to a change in my personal situation I've unfotunately taken that down to one. The remaining one is a local air ambulance (For some bizarre reason they're not government funded in England and Wales) that once saved the life of my brother's best friend after a car-crash broke his back and killed the other two guys that he was in the car with - I'll always be happy to give them money.
