The word "notorious" typically has a negative meaning.

That is not the case here:

When Paris fell to the Germans in July 1940, the sultan, then 30, was put in a precarious position as Morocco came under the rule of the collaborationist French Vichy regime. Among their first acts, the new overseers sought to impose anti-Semitic laws in Morocco, as per Nazi protocol. Jews had lived in that part of the world since well before Carthage fell, and over a quarter of a million called Morocco their home in 1940. Members of the community had served the sultans' court as ministers, diplomats and advisors. Mohammed V took seriously his role as Commander of the Faithful, which he viewed to include all "people of the book," meaning everyone belonging to the Abrahamic faiths — Jews, Christians and Muslims. He bravely and publicly declined to assist in the persecution of his own Jewish citizens.

"There are no Jews in Morocco," he declared. "There are only Moroccan subjects."

            • How the offspring of Nazis celebrated my father the Holocaust survivor

Stranger than fiction: the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Nazi soldiers put on a show in Israel about the life of my father, the late Auschwitz survivor and journalist Noah Klieger.

The March of Life is an initiative by Jobst and Charlotte Bittner. Jobst shares a grim family history, like other organization members, and discovered his grandfather’s Nazi past by mistake. “I discovered the truth eight years ago, but the desire to do something came earlier. I always knew that the silence about these events must end,” he said.

The organization was founded in 2007 with the support of the Evangelical Church from the Black Forest region. So far, its members have so far marched in 250 cities, in 20 countries around the world, alongside Jewish and Christian communities. “We call it: ‘Remembering, making peace and taking a stand for Israel,” Jobst concludes.

His report has not been made public, but this week von Thadden sent another email.

“I do not think that Kurt Hamann can serve as a role model for young scholars at the University of Mannheim,” von Thadden wrote. “The whole university owes you a debt of gratitude.”

                • Holocaust hero who saved hundreds of Jewish children dies at 108

Georges Loinger, a French Jewish resistance fighter, escorted his young charges to the Swiss border in order to escape the Nazi occupiers.

Born in Strasburg in 1910, Loinger was the cousin of another well-known French Jewish resistance fighter, the mime artist Marcel Marceau. He served in the French military, and was captured by the Germans in 1940, but was able to escape a prisoner of war camp in Germany. Thanks to his fair features and athletic figure, the Germans never suspected his Jewish origin."Sport made me the opposite of an anguished Jew,” he told the Tribune Juive, “I walked with great naturalness."

                    • Stunning museum cutting through a Jerusalem mountain

There are places so powerful that you need to get hold of yourself and just be there in that moment of silence after your visit. One of the most energetically dominant museums with the quietest exit is Yad Vashem – Israel's official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.

Established in 1953 (new building dedicated in 2005) the museum is located on the Mount of Remembrance, overlooking Jerusalem. We visited the memorial and got a chance to talk to Moshe Safdie – renowned architect, theorist and author, who created one of the most grandiose and simultaneously touching museum buildings of the world.

                        • 15,000 murders a day: August-October 1942 were the Holocaust's deadliest months

From August to October 1942, 1.2 million Jews were slain in the Nazi death camps, an almost inconceivable 15,000 people per day, a new study suggests.

This is more than previously calculated, and is a rate that surpasses recent genocides such as the one that occurred in Rwanda in 1994. In fact, roughly 25 percent of all Holocaust victims were murdered from August to October 1942, which was quite likely the deadliest three months in human history as the German killing machine was at its most lethal.

                              • Six unidentified Holocaust victims to be interred at UK Jewish cemetery

The remains – believed to be five adults and one child – will be given a Jewish funeral at Bushey New Cemetery in Hertfordshire, England later this month.

“We have the opportunity to do what was denied to our brothers and sisters during the Holocaust: to provide a dignified and appropriate Jewish burial,” said Michael Goldstein, president of the United Synagogue, which is organizing the funeral.
