  • The NATO Thread

There's a lot going on in NATO right now. A dedicated thread might be a good idea to get an overview.

NATO’s essential purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.

    The Readiness Action Plan

At the 2014 Wales Summit, NATO agreed a Readiness Action Plan (RAP) to ensure the Alliance is ready to respond swiftly and firmly to new security challenges. This is the most significant reinforcement of NATO's collective defence since the end of the Cold War. The RAP addresses risks and threats from the east and the south.

I'm looking forward to see what capabilities this new force will bring.
NATO Response Force / Very High Readiness Joint Task Force

At the Wales Summit in 2014, NATO Allies agreed to enhance the capabilities of the NATO Response Force (NRF) in order to respond to emerging security challenges posed by Russia as well as the risks emanating from the Middle East and North Africa. This force is now in transition as military staff work to phase in the concept of a Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) into the overall NRF structure.

                  Helping Ukraine Defend Itself

For many nations, a 2 week exercise in Western Ukraine is a good chance to test capabilities. For the Ukrainians, it is a much needed opportunity to hone battlefield tactics that may be put into effect.

U.S. troops to participate in massive NATO exercise

NATO will hold its largest amphibious exercise in more than a decade this fall with more than 30 nations and 36,000 allied troops participating, including robust support from U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines.
Trident Juncture, set to unfold across Western Europe from Oct. 3 to Nov. 6, will take place as tensions continue to escalate between Russia and some Eastern European NATO members who are shaken by saber-rattling in the region and continued Russian intervention in Ukraine.

US will keep and reactivate its weapon storage facilities in Germany and other western EU states according to DPA. Coleman Barracks in Mannheim hand over to Germans was postponed untill further notice. Base will store 1200 vechicles including 250 tanks temporarly untill equipment is moved to eastern NATO states.

ps. According to my ex-para buddy swift response will include largest simultaneous western troops para drop in europe since end of cold war.

                          NATO-built airports going to Afghans

KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- A series of airports built by NATO to fight the Taliban are being handed over to the Afghan government in a civil-aviation upgrade that officials hope will fuel not only regional trade but also tourism.

The eight airfields, worth an estimated $2 billion, are scattered around a landlocked and mountainous land that lacks rail transport and decent roads.
