  • Tri-service maritime exercise 'Paschim Lehar' begins

    MUMBAI: Around 40 ships, submarines and fighter aircraft participated in 'Paschim Lehar', a tri-service maritime exercise off India's western coast, the Navy said on Wednesday. The objective of the exercise, which commenced on February 12, is to build interoperability, an official spokesperson said.

    "This exercise includes participation of a large number of ships, submarines and aircraft from the Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy. Units from Eastern Naval Command, Indian Army, Indian Air Force and the Coast Guard are also participating to build interoperability," the spokesperson said in a statement.

              • Navy’s all-woman crew back after circling the globe

                Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on Monday welcomed the Navy’s six-member all-woman crew who arrived here after circumnavigating the globe in over eight months on board the naval vessel INSV Tarini. The expedition, christened ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’, was flagged off from the INS Mandovi boat pool here on September 10 last year.

                Led by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi, the crew had Lt Commanders Pratibha Jamwal and Swati P, and Lieutenants Aishwarya Boddapati, S Vijaya Devi and Payal Gupta as other members. They completed the feat in the 55-foot sailing vessel, INSV Tarini, which was inducted into the Navy on February 18 last year.

                  • Boeing’s Apache, Chinook helicopters for India complete inaugural flights

                    American defence major Boeing has carried out the first flights of the Apache and Chinook military helicopters and delivery to the Indian Air Force will commence next year, officials said today.

                    India is procuring 22 AH-64E Apache attack choppers and 15 CH-47F(I) Chinook heavy-lift helicopters from Boeing.

                    “First flight of India’s Apache and Chinook helicopters are important milestones towards strengthening Indian armed forces capabilities,” Boeing India President Pratyush Kumar said in a statement.
