  • Hero of Mogadishu Brig.Gen. Ulrich Wegener, founder of GSG 9, dies aged 88

The founder and first commander of Germany's premier anti-terrorism unit GSG 9, Ulrich K. Wegener, has died aged 88, a Federal Police spokesperson confirmed.
Wegener, who retired a Brigadier General and a recipient of the Commander's Cross of Germany's Order of Merit, had gained international recognition for his role in suppressing the activities of Palestinian militants and leftist extremists during the late 1970s. On October 18 1977, he led the storming of hijacked airliner Flight 181 in Mogadishu, Somalia, rescuing all hostages and killing the terrorists aboard the aircraft. Wegener also received praise for his role in the establishing of cordial relations between Germany's police and the security apparatuses of Israel and the United Kingdom, less than 30 years after World War 2. After his retirement, Wegener worked as a sought-after advisor on matters of homeland security in Germany and in Israel.

Rest in peace, Sir. Your achievements will not be forgotten.
