Falklands 'raided' by British Special Forces to test the garrison's security, says UK media

British Special forces have carried a raid on the Falkland Islands to test the garrison's security amid fears that Argentina may try to land commandos on the Islands, according to a piece published in the Sunday Express. Apparently such routine exercises are carried out in UK highly sensitive bases and defense compounds.

Couple more bits and pieces to help flesh the thread back out:

RAF has now taken to carpet bombing Cardiff's inhabitants with boxes of 24hr Chilli Con Carne :http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-s...wales-32390403

                  and

Telegraph interview with Lt. General Frederick Hodges, Commander of US Army Europe (USAREUR) concerning Russian activity and what it means for NATO in Europe/Europe's Security - with a little endorsement of our lot chucked in there for good measure. Seemed sincere enough on his part: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...commander.html

The British Army’s Warrior armoured vehicle demonstrated its firepower and fighting capability during successful firing trials in Scotland. The new turret and cannon, which has been designed and installed by engineers at Lockheed Martin UK's Ampthill site were tested during trials at Kirkcudbright ranges.

An expensive way to feed sheep, guessing someone got a right old ear bashing for what happened.

According to Twitter, Dave has pledged RN support to the migrant search and rescue operation in the Med. I believe Bulwark is in the area.

With an SDSR looming, watch out for all 3 publicity machines to kick it up a notch.

Here in Canada, CNC News ran a story a few days ago on the British election and the interesting parallels with past Canadian elections with numerous parties competing for votes and seats. The article focused on the Conservatives' pledge to balance the budget and reduce the debt, and seemd to hint at "savage cuts" if re-elected. It would seem that the British Armed Forces will be in for even leaner times no matter which party or coalition gets elected. No surprise to those in the UK I am sure, but it has me wondering what will be cut from defence. It is clear from the present state of the Armed Forces that it will be 'meat' and not 'fat', because there is none left. I applaud the UK government's fiscal responsibility which has left the country in better shape than most other European countries, and its Armed Forces still compare favourably with other European nations. There has been much progress of late in improving defence procurement, but sustained investment and long term planning is essential for successful manageemnt of the Armed Forces.
