One of the very best books I have ever read is Hirsch's book Defensive Shield .

There is a lot of information on the IDF, the good and bad.

Hirsh does a very impressive job describing LIC / asymmetrical / counter-insurgency at both the theoretical and operational level.

His description of the IDF prior to the Second Lebanon War, and discussion of the 91st Division during the war is critical reading for anyone who thinks the IDF performed poorly.

I suspect that history will prove the war to be an IDF success. Hirsh writes very positively of the performance of his forces. Of course, this is to be expected as he was the Division Commander.

Nevertheless, the facts indicates this to be the case as 1) he was a) exonerated and commended by the Winograd Commission, & b) returned to IDF service, and 2) the border has been quite for almost 12 years.

I suppose a bit of a disclaimer, while I never met him personally, I did participate in some of the events he describes in the late 80's (which is interesting to see in print).
Interesting...never heard of that book, and I too try to get has much on the IDF and Israeli security as possible (next up is Ronen Bergaman's "Rise and Kill First" about the targeted killings).

        Amazon carries Hirsch's book.

I am currently reading Bergman's book. Some interesting new information, but a lot of known stories, re-told.

That said, some of his commentary is critical, from a general emerging 21st perspective on morality. I can see our enemies using this information out of context to try to defame Israel.

        • I think Bergman is an excellent writer. His "Secret War With Iran" is an amazing read

          • 27 YEARS SINCE THE GULF WAR - WHY DIDN'T ISRAEL RESPOND?

Politicking and diplomacy made Israel sit on its hands while Scud missiles reined down.

The release recently by the IDF and Defense Ministry archives of interviews with me and the late Lt.-Gen. Dan Shomron, who was defense minister and chief of staff at the time of the Gulf War, has rekindled the debate about whether Israel should have responded to the Iraqi missile attacks during the Gulf War. Thirty-nine Scud missiles were launched from western Iraq against Israeli targets during the five-and-a-half weeks of the war. Only six landed in populated areas, causing considerable property damage and the loss of a single life.

Did Israel send any special forces into Iraq in Scud-hunting missions? It seems likely it would have done so, but I haven't seen any reliable source that mention it.

I have heard that rumor for years too.

A variation is that a friendly Western country allowed the IDF sof to use it's uniforms ...

It would not surprise me if there is some truth to the basic rumor, but if so, we have years to go before it is confirmed.

Yeah, I've heard various "reports" about this too. I would be actually enormously surprised if it wasn't the case.

                    https://www.flightglobal.com/news/ar...-offen-445921/

The sequence of attacks that was ignited by the Iranian attempt to fly a UAV into Israeli airspace will have immediate effects on the way the Israeli air force will approach such situations in the future. With Iran's deep penetration into Syria, another such clash is just a matter of time.

While there is no indication that any one of Israel’s enemies is interested in initiating a full-scale war, the growing explosiveness of the region means that any tactical incident can turn into an armed conflict– and one front can ignite others.

I wonder who makes them. They look like crappy versions of crye precision.

                              Hi,
In fact, they are not copies of Crye Precision, but utterly dreadful copies of uniforms produced by the British company Keela. Keela uniforms, which are of a high standard, have been used by IDF special forces for years, along with some samples of gear made by the Israeli company Fibrotex.

I can't get over just how poor and dated IDF uniforms appear. Money is constantly being wasted on incremental changes when root and branch reform is required.

If you think these uniforms look bad, have you seen what the forthcoming range of dun-coloured camouflage uniforms are going to look like? shudder . . .
