  • MAD-FIRES: Gun system for engaging multiple targets from different directions

According to DARPA, the Multiple Azimuth Defence-Fast Intercept Round Engagement System(MAD-FIRES) programme is "to design and develop technologies associated with a medium-calibre guided projectile that would combine the guidance, precision and accuracy generally afforded by missiles with the speed, rapid-fire capability and large ammunition capability afforded by bullets".
Sounds fascinating, it makes me think of the gun-launched missile hype by he Soviets, which turned out to be of little battlefield utility(think about the missile for the 2A70 gun ).
What is more, the DARPA says the per-engagement cost of the MAD-FIRES system will be decreased by a factor of 10 or more. So it is accurate, precise, fast and never runs out of ammo. That really sounds like a "having the cake and eating it too" story. What do you think, guys? Any contribution appreciated.

Yeah, that's exactly what's on my mind now, their problems being different though. The MAD-FIRES is too demanding while the LRLAP too costly.
